This is a bad BAD situation!

Acrylic on Canvas, 100 by 70 cm, 2023.

Where fire meets water, creatures of the earth clash in a dance of survival.

In “This is a bad BAD situation!”, a dramatic scene unfolds where a man aboard a traditional Maltese Luzzu boat is attacked by a sea creature, symbolizing the dire state of the oceans. The boat, known for its bright colors and cultural significance, is caught in this moment of peril, reflecting humanity’s struggle against forces it can no longer control. At the forefront of the painting, the floating shapes of plastic bottles highlight a dual issue: Malta’s pollution crisis and its reliance on bottled water due to undrinkable tap water. These bottles symbolize both the environmental impact of waste in the sea and the broader challenges the population faces in accessing clean, drinkable water. The sea creature, rising from the depths, represents the growing dangers humanity faces due to its continued neglect of the environment. The clash between fire and water intensifies the sense of danger. Fire here could suggest the destructive impact of human industrialization or climate change, while water symbolizes life and nature, which are now threatened. The use of bold colors and chaotic lines heightens the tension, capturing the urgency of the crisis. This painting conveys a powerful message about the environmental threats we face, blending human traditions, like the Maltese boat, with modern-day concerns of pollution and ecological disaster.

Trouble on the Waves

Acrylic on Canvas, 100 by 70 cm, 2024.

The painting feels like a lively, collision of mythology, environmental destruction, and divine judgment. It conveys a layered story where the sirens’ deadly antics not only lure sailors but also contribute to the pollution of their home waters, suggesting that even divine intervention may be necessary to confront the mess they have created. This artwork is making it feel alive with both humor and underlying menace.
